Nell'ambito del PRIN (Programmi di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale 2007) è stata svolta una ricerca mutidisciplinare e multiscala sugli interventi volti al miglioramento e al recupero di alcuni spazi del sottosuolo urbano ed extraurbano. La Puglia è una delle regioni a più elevata densità di ipogei con alta valenza archeologica e storico- artistica, attualmente in stato di conservazione precario, per cui viene obliterata la lettura completa dell'insediamento stesso. Il patrimonio ipogeo, molto complesso e articolato, è basato su una pluralità di processi insediativi e culturali di epoche e connotazioni diverse, strettamente integrati nel tessuto edilizio attuale. I casi presi in esame sono quelli emblematici di Canosa di Puglia, Gravina di Puglia e Palagianello. Se opportunamente valorizzate e messe in relazione con il livello stradale, le aree del sottosuolo possono contribuire attivamente allo sviluppo di spazi urbani e favorire la trasformazione del territorio in un ben più vasto processo di controllo e rinnovamento della forma del
paesaggio mediterraneo.

Intense and/or prolonged rainy periods can lead to the development of territorial crisis during which landslides and
floods simultaneously trigger on wide areas. During these crises the possibility to manage the emergency phases
and ensure the maintenance of man activities which are usually carried out in the hit area is mainly tied to the road
network efficiency.
Unfortunately, in areas characterized by rugged morphology, long road tracks pass through unstable lands which
are frequently affected by landslide phenomena. At the same time, on coastal areas the road network is most intensely
exposed to the action of rivers, especially if the bridges crossing them are not enough wide to convey also
ordinary river floods.
This situation can be easily recognized in many areas all around the world_ in the present work we present the
methodological approach and an exemplificative case study on a test area located in Calabria (South Italy). Here,
also because of a low efficiency of the road network, during heavy rainfall periods, landslides and floods cause
several traffic interruptions which hinder or set back the movements of people and stuffs and, in the most severe
cases, make difficult emergency management actions.
Data concerning damage caused to the road network by landslides and floods have been extracted from a wide
archive containing data on historical landslides and floods occurred through the past centuries all over the region.
For the selected study area these data have been uploaded in a GIS, in order to obtain the phenomena/damage
distribution during the most severe rainfall events occurred through the past century. Data concerning triggering
rainfall, extracted from a regional rainfall database, have been treated in order to schematize some main models of
rainfall/phenomena distribution which occurred in the past and can be used for preventive measures.
The results of this activity can be exploited for practical purposes, to define scenarios and strategies for risk management,
to suggest priorities in policy towards disaster mitigation and preparedness and to predispose defensive
measures and civil protection plans ranked according to the type's situation to cope with.

A research on the relationships between the geological and structural settings and the distribution of slope
movements was carried out in the Tornada river basin, Central western Portugal (107 km2). The basin was chosen
for its geological and tectonic features and for the abundance of slope movements. The study area is situated in a
dissected old quaternary coastal plateau with an evident syncline structure, where crop out mainly upper Jurassic
sandstones and claystones.
A detailed structural-geological map at 1_10 000 scale and a detailed landslide inventory map were prepared
through the interpretation of stereoscopic aerial photographs and extensive field surveys. The landslides were
classified according to the type of movement and the relative age into shallow and deep-seated failures (mainly
translational), recent and old in age.
The distribution of the landslides and their relationship with lithology and bedding attitude were studied considering
in particular_ i) the presence of weak lithological layers; ii) the attitude of planar and continuous bedding
planes dipping towards the free-face of slope; iii) the presence of favourable hydrogeological conditions; and iv)
the occurrence of normal faults.
The relationship between structural setting, geological information and landslides was studied in order to
understand the factors that mainly describe the instability conditions of the area.

The key role played by soil moisture in both Global Hydrological Cycle and Earth Radiation Budget has been
claimed by numerous authors during past decades. The importance of this environmental variable is evident in
several natural processes operating in a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. At continental and regional
scales soil moisture influences the evapotranspiration process and so acts indirectly on the climate processes; at
middle scale is one of the major controls of the infiltration-runoff soil response during rainfall events; at small
scales the knowledge of soil moisture evolution is crucial for precision agriculture and the associated site-specific
management practices.
