This contribution describes the approach of two wide coastal areas, located in two countries, Argentina and Italy, to the regulation of groundwater utilisation and protection, considering the general purpose to satisfy the current demand of high quality water and to guarantee sustainable utilisation of groundwater resources. The contribution also considers some local government initiatives concerning the protection of water resources, in terms of availability and quality, and of ecosystems. Moreover, attention is given to the effect of the whole water cycle management, comparing Italian national legislation, defined in the framework of European Union, considering the specificities of Apulian region, with Argentine national legislation, considering the specificity of Buenos Aires province. Natural resources management is considered from two perspectives_ legislation and the government structure managing it. It can be argued that the two cases studied possess, up to a certain extent, completely opposing advantages and disadvantages and are therefore complementary.

The large Sibari Plain (southern Italy) is crossed by 24 rivers with mouths on the Ionian Sea. On the basis of a huge analysis of tens of boring, geophysical studies and many hydrogeological surveying campaigns, the conceptual model of the whole plain is defined. The shallow and phreatic aquifer and the deep and confined aquifer can be distinguished. The numerical model of flow is calibrated considering climatic, river yield and piezometric data and it is utilised to evaluate the effect of current groundwater discharge by wells. The numerical results are compared and validated considering a time series approach based on the utilisation rainfall, temperature and piezometric data collected from the thirties until 2006 in-situ measurements. The numerical simulation of the current stage of groundwater discharge shows it is not sustainable in the case of shallow aquifer and it can be improved in the case of deep aquifer.

We compare the results of two independent synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry (DInSAR) approaches to slope instability investigations in the Maratea valley (Southern Italy), based on different processing methods and software. The area selected for the comparison is well ground truthed and provides suitable examples of movements ranging from mm to cm per year. The DInSAR analyses are based on the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) and Stable Point INterferometry over Unurbanised Areas (SPINUA) techniques. Both methods are applied to SAR images acquired by the ERS-1/2 satellites in the period 1992-2000. Despite the differences in the data processing and minor discrepancies between the displacement maps, mainly due to differences in data classification and thresholding, the results obtained from the two techniques are largely comparable and provide very similar ground surface motion information that leads to a clear distinction between stable and unstable areas and between the zones with different velocity of movement.

Water and chemical fluxes across the sea floor provide an important linkage between terrestrial and marine environments. Oceanographers recognize that these fluxes may act as a source of nutrients or other harmful contaminants to marine systems (e.g. Johannes, 1980; Valiela et al., 1990). These fluxes may also act as a beneficial source of freshwater for coastal marine estuaries that require relatively low salinities. Hydrologists and hydrogeologists recognize that fluxes across the sea floor comprise an important part of the water balance for coastal aquifers. Most fresh groundwater discharge to the ocean is derived from terrestrial aquifer recharge. Management of coastal aquifers requires careful estimates of recharge and other hydrological components, such as groundwater discharge. These estimates are commonly combined into a comprehensive water budget to evaluate how much groundwater might be available for municipal uses and whether saltwater intrusion may be a potential concern. Excessive groundwater withdrawals can cause saltwater intrusion by intercepting the seaward flux of freshwater that prevents saltwater from intruding a coastal aquifer. Quantitative estimates of fresh groundwater discharge toward the coast can provide a basis for determining safe withdrawal rates. Oceanographers, marine scientists, and those studying and managing saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers, share a common goal of quantification and understanding of groundwater and seawater interactions. Submarine groundwater discharge, or SGD, has become a popular term in the literature for describing the flux of water across the sea floor. Burnett et al. (2003) specifically define SGD as the discharge of aquifer porewater across the sea floor and into the ocean. They define flow in the opposite direction as submarine groundwater recharge (SGR). SGR is the recharging flux of seawater into the aquifer. The presence of SGR does not necessarily indicate saltwater intrusion, which occurs when saline water moves into parts of the aquifer previously occupied by freshwater. A conceptual model of the types of flow patterns that are expected to exist in many coastal aquifers at the terrestrial-marine boundary is shown. Through a detailed field study, Kohout (1960) showed that as fresh groundwater flows seaward, it meets and mixes with saline groundwater before discharging into the ocean. Because of this mixing and subsequent discharge to the ocean, seawater is drawn into the aquifer to replace the saline groundwater that discharged to the ocean. Seawater drawn into the aquifer is sometimes referred to as recirculated seawater. Michael et al. (2005) suggest that the seasonality of terrestrial recharge may also act as a mechanism for recirculating seawater through a coastal aquifer. As the mixing zone moves landward and seaward in response to seasonal fluctuations in recharge, seawater may be drawn in and flushed out of the aquifer over the course of a year. SGD can also occur at the bottom of the open ocean, even in the absence of a terrestrial connection. Waves, tides, and ocean currents can create hydraulic gradients that pump seawater across the sea floor. Interest in groundwater-seawater interactions continues to receive a significant amount of attention in the literature. Saltwater intrusion, freshwater deliveries to marine estuaries, and nutrient loading are persistent problems of global importance. The problems are difficult to address, however, because of the elusive nature of SGD. Fortunately, the science is advancing. The journal Biogeochemistry, dedicated the entire November 2003 issue to the subject of SGD as did the journal Ground Water, in the December 2004 issue. Zektser & Dzhamalov (2007) released a comprehensive review on the subject of SGD and groundwater-seawater interactions in a new book_ Submarine Groundwater. In their book, they suggest that SGD and related studies should be categorized into a new field called "Marine Hydrogeology". The concentrated efforts of numerous researchers from a wide range of disciplines have led to substantial advancements in characterizing SGD, but there is still more work to be done.

Nell'ambito del Progetto Finalizzato "Beni Culturali" del CNR (1993-2002) sono stati condotti studi interdisciplinari di geomorfologia, mineralogia, tettonica e geotecnica per la definizione delle incidenze geologiche e geotecniche che hanno influito sulla evoluzione del sito archeologico di Sibari, localizzato nella piana alluvionale omonima, e per determinare le cause che hanno prodotto la subsidenza dell'area sin da tempi remoti. Le ricerche sono state effettuate con prove e misure in situ e con l'esecuzione di sondaggi geognostici a carotaggio continuo da cui sono stati prelevati, a diverse profondità, numerosi campioni di sostanza organica e resti fossili da sottoporre ad analisi al 14C. Sulla base di questi dati, con il prosieguo delle ricerche, è stato possibile ricostruire con dettaglio la curva di risalita del livello del mare e, attraverso l'analisi dei profili litostratigrafici, biostratigrafici, e cronostratigrafici, di correlare gli eventi paleoclimatici con gli ambienti di sedimentazione.

Si caratterizzano le tendenze delle variabili climatiche che determinano la disponibilità di risorse idriche e gli effetti sulla disponibilità di acque sotterranee, analizzando serie temporali mensili inerenti piovosità e temperatura di 126 stazioni collocate in Italia meridionale, tra il 1821 e il 2005. È emersa una tendenza al calo pluviometrico che riguarda il 95% dell'area, dovuto in particolare ad un consistente deficit di precipitazioni a partire dal 1980. La tendenza negativa è accentuata in inverno, solitamente stagione più piovosa su gran parte dell'area considerata. Questo fattore, congiuntamente con temperature maggiori della media ossservate con regolarità dal 1980, determina per la piovosità efficace una tendenza al calo ancora più grave. Gli effetti sulle acque sotterranee sono stati valutati mediante serie storiche mensili considerando vasti acquiferi in Basilicata, Calabria e Puglia, caso descritto nel dettaglio. Ovunque si osserva una spiccata tendenza al calo piezometrico.

This paper describes a case study in the Salento karst (Apulia, southern Italy) in a site that has been intensively used to quarry limestones in the last 30 years. After quarrying activity had stopped, the site was transformed into legal and illegal landfills where solid and liquid wastes have been repeatedly dumped, with serious consequences for the groundwater resources. In this paper, through a geological, petrographical and hydrogeological approach, we attempt to assess the consequences of the anthropogenic activities on the local hydrogeology, with particular regard to the surficial aquifer that is contained in the Plio-Quaternary calcarenites cropping out in the area. Application of some well-known methods to assess the vulnerability of aquifer systems to contamination by human activities (DRASTIC, SINTACS, LeGrand and GOD) highlights the limits of such an approach in karst environment, and the necessity to include in the methods data strictly related to the peculiarity of karst. This is further evidenced by application of the EPIK method, specifically designed for karst areas. The final part of the paper focuses on the need of a thorough understanding of the hydrogeological setting for a better management and policy action of karst environments.

The hydrogeological features of karstic areas widely cause a low amount of runoff respect to underground flow. This aspect is particularly relevant where the climate is arid or semi-arid, as in the case of the low Murge Plateau (Murgia), located in Southern Italy. The runoff is appreciable only as an effect of very high intensity rainfall for the high hydraulic conductivity of karstic outcropping rocks. In these conditions the occurrence of runoff is rare and is often associated to natural flooding of wide portion of territory; this phenomenon is widespread emphasized by low gradient of ground surface and by the presence of endorheic areas. The runoff frequency is so low the human memory can be induced to underestimate the flooding risk and the consequences of the utilisation of natural flooding areas. Agriculture and land use changes in the latest decades have generally caused degradation of the karstic environment also due to the practice of stone clearing and crushing, potentially favouring development of erosion, desertification and modifying the water cycle. At the same time, other anthropogenic activities such as hydraulics works, realisation of road and railway crossings, quarries and the realisation of works and buildings in river and flooding areas have increased the vulnerability along the drainage network. The contribution highlights the peculiarity of flooding risk in the case of the selected karstic area, characterising the role of human effects on the damages caused by more dramatic events.

The risk characterisation of quality and availability degradation of groundwater resources has been pursued for a wide coastal plain (Metaponto plain, Italy), an area covering 40 km along the Ionian Sea and 10 km inland. The quality degradation is due two phenomena_ pollution due to discharge of waste water (coming from urban areas) and due to salt pollution, related to seawater intrusion but not only. The availability decrease is due to overexploitation but also due to drought effects. Data of 1,130 wells have been collected. Wells, homogenously distributed in the area, were the source of geological, stratigraphical, hydrogeological, geochemical data. In order to manage space-related information via a GIS, a database system has been devised to encompass all the surveyed wells and the body of information available per well. Geo-databases were designed to comprise the tree types of data collected_ a database including geological and hydrogeological data (HDB), a database devoted to chemical and physical data on groundwater (CDB), and a database including the geotechnical parameters (GDB). The record pertaining to each well is identified in these databases by the progressive number of the well itself. Every database is designed as follows_ a) the HDB contains 1,158 records, 28 of and 31 fields, mainly describing the geometry of the well and of the stratigraphy; b) the CDB encompasses data about 157 wells, based on which the chemical and physical analyses of groundwater have been carried out. More than one record has been associated with thes 157 wells, due to periodic monitoring and analysis; c) the GDB covers 61 wells to which the geotechnical parameters are referred. Each well is ascribed a set of geotechnical data which have been yielded by soil samples taken at various depths. Based on geo-databases, the geostatistical processing of data has permitted to characterise the degradation risk of groundwater resources of a wide coastal aquifer.

Le isole Tremiti rappresentano un particolare esempio in cui i processi di demolizione delle falesie sono estremamente attivi e dovuti essenzialmente alle condizioni di affioramento degli ammassi carbonatici di età compresa fra il Paleocene ed il Pliocene medio-superiore con coperture pleistoceniche ed oloceniche, morfologicamente e strutturalmente controllati dall'evoluzione geodinamica, e dall'esposizione ad agenti esogeni quali l'azione disgregatrice esercitata dalle mareggiate, agli effetti del weathering dovuti allo spray marino e al dilavamento da parte delle acque meteoriche, all'azione eolica e, sia pure con intensità non rilevante, all'attività sismica.
