Of more than 400 filled lakes now identified on Titan, the first and largest reported in the southern latitudes is Ontario Lacus, which is dark in both infrared and microwave. Here we describe recent observations including synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images by Cassini's radar instrument (l = 2 cm) and show morphological evidence for active material transport and erosion. Ontario Lacus lies in a shallow depression, with greater relief on the southwestern shore and a gently sloping, possibly wavegenerated beach to the northeast. The lake has a closed internal drainage system fed by Earth-like rivers, deltas and alluvial fans. Evidence for active shoreline processes, including the wave-modified lakefront and deltaic deposition, indicates that Ontario is a dynamic feature undergoing typical terrestrial forms of littoral modification.

The historical variations in landslide activity are investigated in the Rocchetta S. Antonio territory, where sown fields cover 75% of the total area. The perception of the inhabitants is that landsliding has increased in recent years, and climate change has been invoked as a case. However, since 1865 annual precipitation has decreased c. 8% per century in southeastern Italy and local rainfall data for the 1955-2008 period show high inter-annual variability with statistically uncertain trends. In the same decades human alterations to the local environment were considerable. To demonstrate the impacts of land-use changes, detailed landslide and land-use maps spanning the 1976-2006 period have been constructed and the spatial-temporal changes in the context of the local precipitation patterns have been analysed. It is shown that the frequency of landsliding in 2006 was 160% higher than in 1976, even though both years were comparably wet. The sown fields increased by 46% from 1976 to 2006, and the landslide density was 55% higher on the new sown fields; that is, those cultivated after 1976. Thus, the higher susceptibility to landsliding is linked to the land-use changes and especially to the new ploughing for EU-sponsored wheat cultivation that has taken place on the steeper slopes.

Sinkholes constitute a significant risk in many karst areas, and may even threat human safety. Collapse sinkholes that occur catastrophically without showing premonitory signs may result in severe economic losses and casualties. In the last years, research on sinkholes and related detrimental effects has significantly increased in Italy, in the aftermath of remarkable events. Aimed at analysing the peculiar conditions which lead to sinkhole occurrence in Southern Italy, a set of cases in the plain areas of Campania, Apulia and Calabria is discussed. The considered regions show a wide variety of environmental conditions. In Campania, the plains are underlain by alluvial deposits with intercalations of volcaniclastic sediments. Sinkholes are generally located along the Tyrrhenian margin of the carbonate massifs or within intramontane Apennine basins. In Apulia, a flat and elongated peninsula, most of the cases occur on calcarenites overlying limestone bedrock along the coast. In Calabria, one of the most seismogenic Italian regions, the surveyed cases seem to be attributable mainly to earthquake-induced liquefaction. The article provides a first glance on the variety of sinkholes in the plain areas of Southern Italy, to highlight the possibility of further subsidence events in the considered regions, as well as in other comparable areas of the country.

Instability phenomena in the Upper Miocene to Pleistocene deposits of the evaporite karst in the Crotone Basin (Calabria, southern Italy), are described in this article. Calabria is worldwide known as one of the most landslide-prone areas in the Mediterranean basin. Different types of slope movements affect the outcropping rocks in the region, due to the combined action of a number of causal factors, either predisposing (abundance of weathered materials, rugged topography, high relief energy, and active tectonic uplift), or triggering (heavy rainfall, moderate to strong seismic shocks, and anthropogenic action). In a karst area, such as that dealt with here, further instability is related to development of sinkholes, subsidence phenomena, and the presence of karst caves_ the area includes several renowned caves as the system Grave Grubbo - Vallone Cùfalo (the second longest Italian gypsum cave, with a length over 2,800 m). Observed slope movements belong to diff erent typologies, with the greater impact on the anthropogenic environment deriving from rockfalls above the main communication routes. A less dramatic but very subtle type of instability is represented by sinkholes, a very common karst landform in evaporite rocks. Many caves have their entrance at the base of large sinkholes or in their proximity. Th e effects from gravitational and erosional processes are described in the article also through direct observations within the underground system, which pattern is controlled by a combination of tectonics and breakdown mechanisms. Th e low resistance of evaporites, locally increased by prevailing clays in the stratigraphy, determines high frequency of fallen blocks. The comparison between the landforms and deposits observed at the surface and underground pointed out to the difficulty in directly linking what is observed at the ground with the processes acting within the karst system. This has obvious consequences in terms of civil protection, due to the lack of premonitory signs at the ground surface, or to difficulties in observing, and correctly evaluating, such signals.

In karstic areas, the mean annual stream flow is low in terms of mean annual net rainfall percentage, and, in many cases, stream flow is so rare to be considered an exceptional independent of the peak flow value. Nevertheless, many types of flooding processes can be identified in karsts. We consider the recharge-related flooding of a bare karst, with a case study of a Mediterranean area dominated by semi-arid climate. In these cases floods are rare, short, and sudden but the effects are often very dramatic. Three types of analyses were used. The historical analysis focused on the series of past or historical flood events, which provided a means to define the flood recurrence period and damage levels, and the main steps of anthropogenic development expressed by the population number and needs. The hydrological analysis considered long time series of annual maximum short rainfalls, in order to assess the return period of high intensity rainfall that caused the studied flood event. The geomorphological analysis considered rainfall, the hydrogeological characteristics of outcropping rocks and soils and the geomorphological data of the drainage basin to calculate net rainfall and peak flow characteristics. We explored historical flood events for the study area, characterising the role of human effects on damages, and used a recent flood event to test our capability to estimate ephemeral river flow on the basis of rainfall measurements. The historical analysis of floods and damages highlighted four flood periods, distinguished on the basis of the recurrence period and the level of damages. It is clear that the lessons of past flood events are quickly forgotten. The hydro-geomorphological analyses showed the peculiarities of the 2005 flood event. The maximum rainfall return period for the 2005 event was due to exceptional three-hour cumulative rainfall. This study shows that we can estimate peak flow characteristics even when time series of river flows are not available, thereby allowing us to improve our capability to forecast the flooding effects of severe storms in karstic areas.

A period of bad weather conditions due to prolonged intense rainfall and strong winds can trigger landslides, floods, secondary floods (accumulation of rain on surfaces with low permeability), and sea storms, causing damage to humans and infrastructure. As a whole, these periods of bad weather and triggered phenomena can be defined as damaging hydrogeological events (DHEs). We define a methodological approach based on seven simple indexes to analyze such events. The indexes describe the return period (T) and trend of rainfall, the extent of hit areas, and the level of damages; they can be considered attributes of georeferenced features and analyzed with GIS techniques. We tested our method in an Italian region frequently hit by DHEs. In a period of 10 years, 747 damaging phenomena (landslides, 43%; floods, 38%) and 94 DHEs have been classified. The road network and housing areas are the most frequently damaged elements, threatened by all types of damaging phenomena. T classes are almost in accordance with the level of damage. These results can be used to outline warning levels for civil protection purposes, to forecast the areas most likely to be hit and the potential ensuing damage, to disseminate information concerning vulnerable areas, and to increase people’s awareness of risk.

The study area is located in the Murgia plateau which constitutes a large and deep coastal karstic aquifer (of Mesozoic age); the predominant rock material of which is either limestone or limestonedolomite. The aquifer is affected by karst and fracturing phenomena, also well below the sea level, whereas intruded seawater underlies fresh groundwater owing to a difference in density. The groundwater flow is confined except on a restricted coastline strip. A strong connection between the increase in salt contamination and the lowering of piezometric levels, which can be ascribed to groundwater overdraft and/or a natural decrease in groundwater recharge, has been recognised in the coastal area. The fluctuations of the transition zone, in the absence of human influences, are closely related to alternating periods of recharge and depletion of the aquifer, though a certain unbalance is likely to occur between recharge due to rainfall infiltration and the discharge due tapping by wells. To contribute to the study of these phenomena on the basis of affordable and long-lasting data, a surveying station was realised in a well bored for this purpose in the urban area of Bari. The monitoring started in 2004; collecting data on piezometric level, water temperature. Multi-parameter logs are executed every six month along the well, using probes equipped with sensors of temperature, specific electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen and Eh. The detailed characterisation of vertical flow variability has been realised with tracer tests realised in the well. The sampling of groundwater and the analysis of laboratory complete the carried out activity. The time series and whole data are anyalised highlighting the peculiarities of the selected karstic aquifer.

Population growth, urbanization and global climate change have increased urban and agricultural water demands, stressing aquifer systems where groundwater is a source of water supply. The availability and utility of groundwater may further be threatened by factors stressing the quality of groundwater, such as industrial and domestic wastes and agricultural intensification. Consequences include, for example, over-allocation of groundwater, groundwater overdraft, declining well yields and land subsidence; degraded groundwater quality due to mobilization of natural pollutants (arsenic), salt contamination caused by seawater intrusion; increased demand for conjunctively used surface water, and resulting conflicts with junior users; and streamflow capture and resulting damage to ecosystems. These consequences may occur incrementally and inequitably across an aquifer. Natural environmental problems can further complicate use of groundwater and increase strain on the aquifer system; for example, underground structures, geothermal heating (such as heat islands), and geochemical evolution (such as karst formation, excessive salinity, acidity, fluoride, radioactivity, hardness, or turbidity). To address this issue, a joint symposium on the Trends and Sustainability of Groundwater in Highly Stressed Aquifers was held during the 8th Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, IAHS, and the 37th Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeology, IAH, in Hyderabad, India, September 2009. The symposium was organized by the IAHS International Commission on Groundwater (ICGW), supported IAH and by the IAHS International Commission on Water Quality (ICWQ). This symposium brought together scientists, including modellers, geochemists and hydro-geologists, with water supply managers and policy makers to discuss scientific and management ideas and approaches for improving the sustainability of highly stressed aquifers. The importance of this topic was reflected in the large number of contributions to the symposium. Selected papers from this symposium have been compiled in this volume. The editors gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the reviewers who made valuable contributions to this volume. We thank Penny Perrins and Cate Gardner from IAHS Press for their professional approach and help with the processing of the manuscripts.

It follows a recent Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry (PSI) analysis on this area, obtained by processing several tens of ERS satellite images covering the period 1992-2000. The results revealed the presence of a few kilometres long, slowly subsiding zone corresponding very well to the extent of the underground salt mine. The present work aims to extend the analysis by exploiting ALOS-PALSAR data especially for the neighbouring rural areas, relying on the lower sensitivity to temporal decorrelation of L-band w.r.t. C-band radar data. Use of L band data is of interest because it could allow detecting faster ground movements related to sudden subsidence events that have occasionally occurred in the recent past. One such event, reported in the 1990's, caused ground displacements locally exceeding 3 m. Furthermore, with L-band SAR data some useful information can be obtained for the rural areas, which neighbour the salt mine but lack PS. We present results obtained from Fine Beam, HH Single Polarization Mode (FBS), 34.3° Off-Nadir look-angle SAR images. The night acquisition time of FBS PALSAR images mitigates the atmospheric phase screen in each interferogram. No clear evidence of displacements is found on ALOS interferograms spanning about 1 year. The relatively high coherence shown by the interferograms allows easier unwrapping of the differential interferometric phase, aiding further statistical investigations on the spatial properties of the atmospheric signal. We also present considerations concerning some processing aspects of ALOS data, as well as a preliminary comparison between the L-band and C-band differential interferometric phase behaviour.

Hydrogeochemical surveys were carried out in eastern Calabria (Italy) for recognizing the groundwater flow domain, assessing the utilization level, and characterizing the degradation risks. Physical-chemical parameters of groundwater and surface water were determined. Waters draining crystalline and metamorphic rocks have Mg-HCO3 to Na-Ca-HCO3 compositions and low salinity (<0.20 g/L), whereas waters from sedimentary environments belong to the Ca-HCO3 facies and have higher salinity (0.20 to 0.76 g/L). Waters interacting with evaporite formations show a dominant Ca-SO4 composition, and high salinity (up to 2.9 g/L). The concentrations of toxic components are usually low, but in some samples nitrates and arsenic exceed the drinking limit. It is shown that quality degradation is due to anthropogenic activities, mis-use of fertilisers, or discharge of untreated urban wastes.

Apulian groundwater is extremely important for the development of local communities, given the extreme scarcity of surface water that is typical for a widespread karstic region. Valuable groundwater from large carbonate coastal aquifers is discharged at increasing rates for domestic, irrigation, and industrial uses. The increase has been particularly relevant during the many recent drought periods, due to paradoxical management. The trend of piezometric head and spring discharge highlights a dramatic decrease in groundwater availability since the 1920s. The remarkable lowering defines a widespread degradation of high quality groundwater resources in each aquifer considered. The lasting "memory effect" shown by each aquifer can reduce and delay, but cannot completely remove the negative effects of long drought periods and increasing well discharge. These effects are more relevant in some inner portions of aquifers. The piezometric lowering in the Salento Peninsula is slow but especially problematic due to the naturally low piezometric head above sea level, which permits seawater intrusion. Salt quality degradation of the Apulian groundwater, due to effects of seawater intrusion, is feared. The decreasing trend of the piezometric head thus defines not only a decrease in groundwater availability, but also a risk of quality degradation.
