All natural waters contain dissolved minerals from interactions with atmospheric and soil gases, mixing with other solutions, and/or interactions with the biosphere and lithosphere. In many cases, these processes result in natural waters containing solute or salinity above concentrations recommended for a specified use, which creates significant social and economic problems. Groundwater salinisation can be caused by natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities. For the former case, we can distinguish terrestrial and marine phenomena. Approximately 16% of the total area of continental earth is potentially involved in groundwater salinisation. Seawater intrusion can be considered to be the primary phenomenon to be studied in terms of groundwater salinisation. Three schematic approaches to the protection of groundwater via salinisation mitigation and/or groundwater salinity improvement are described based on the classifications of the primary salinisation sources and focusing on the effect of seawater intrusion. The complexity of these approaches generally increases due to difficulties caused by groundwater quality and quantity degradation and increased demand for quality water. In order from the lowest to the highest complexity, these approaches are the engineering approach, the discharge management approach, and the water and land management approach. The engineering approach is realised on the local or detailed scale with the purpose of controlling the salinisation, optimising the well discharge with specific technical solutions and/or completing works to improve the quality and/or quantity of the discharged fresh groundwater. The discharge management approach encompasses at least an entire coastal aquifer and defines rules concerning groundwater utilisation and well discharge. The water and land management approach should be applied on the regional scale. Briefly, this approach becomes necessary when one or more need creates an overall framework of high-quality water scarcity. These conditions, sometimes combined with an awareness of negative environmental effects, force people to accept new water saving practices and land use modifications. As the natural effects of salinisation can be enhanced by a multiplicity of human actions, the discharge management approach and the water and land management approach should generally be applied by water authorities or institutional and governmental organisations that are responsible for groundwater quality and availability. The practical study of Apulian karstic coastal aquifers is discussed in detail. Previously experienced management difficulties are described, as well as a proposed multi-methodological approach based on monitoring networks, the spatiotemporal analysis of groundwater quality changes, and multiparameter well logging. The core of this approach is the definition of the salinity threshold value between pure fresh groundwater and any fresh and saline groundwater mixture. The basic or single tools were defined to be simple, quick and cost-effective to be applicable to the widest range of situations.

Il nocciolo dell'attività di ricerca in corso è finalizzato al raggiungimento della massima accuratezza nella realizzazione di un database di dati storici riguardanti gli eventi dannosi di dissesto idrogeologico in Puglia osservati dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo. I database finora esistenti riguardanti gli eventi idrogeologici dannosi sono stati redatti a scala nazionale; poco si adeguano ad uno studio a livello regionale o sub-regionale, in quanto la magnitudo di eventi locali risulta essere relativamente bassa e disuniforme in funzione delle peculiari condizioni climatiche e geomorfologiche. Per l'ampliamento del database sono state raccolte informazioni da diverse fonti giornalistiche, che costituiscono la principale memoria storica degli eventi passati. In questo modo è possibile coprire un intervallo temporale più ampio e con un maggior dettaglio di informazioni. Questo studio mostra l'utilità di tale strumento ai fini di elaborazioni statistiche riguardanti la distribuzione areale e temporale degli eventi disastrosi sul territorio regionale.

The paper presents the phenomenological interpretation of the failure mechanism involving an active and complex landslide process within the Pisciolo hill-slope (Southern Apennines, Italy). The sliding process interacts with important infrastructures that in the last decade have undergone recurrent damage, prompting a comprehensive investigation and monitoring of the slope features and processes. Based on the study of all the investigation data, the interpretation of the failure mechanism has required the creation of the geological and the geotechnical model of the slope along with the reconstruction of the slope history. The case is representative of the slow evolution of landsliding typically occurring in chain areas where the outcropping clayey soils are extensively disturbed and fissured as result of intense long-lasting tectonics.

We explore new possibilities offered by the recently available X-band satellite radar sensors for landslide hazard assessments on a detailed scale, with particular reference to the exploitation of Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) techniques. Special attention is paid to the impact of the improved resolution of new Xband radar imagery on the PSI results, in terms of quality and quantity of useful information. This evaluation is supported by theoretical modelling as well as by the comparison of results from X-band (CSK) and C-band (ENVISAT) PSI for two areas of interest_ one in Italy and the other in Switzerland. It is demonstrated that with respect to medium resolution ENVISAT PS processing, fewer CSK high resolution images are sufficient to achieve comparable precision of the mean displacement velocity estimates. This, together with the shorter revisit times provided by the CSK constellation, can be very important when dealing with emergency situations. Furthermore, it is quantified that from about 3 to 11 times greater PS densities are obtained with the higher resolution X-band data. This implies more information about ground surface displacements as well as improved landslide monitoring and slope instability investigation capabilities. Furthermore, ground displacement measurements can be interpreted without local knowledge of the focus area or in situ controls, and, nonetheless, guide single hillslope instability assessments with support of Google Earth and its high resolution optical imagery. This "blind" approach will allow one to monitor remote and poorly known regions at high risk of potentially disastrous slope failures.

We investigate the instability of slopes in a 15.6 km2 catchment area in the Southern Apennine mountains (Italy) traversed by a mid-slope road and characterized by predominance of clay-rich flysch units. High resolution multispectral satellite imagery is used to identify active landslides, to investigate their close association with seasonally wet zones (areas covered by free surface-water including ponds, migrating surfacewater, seeps), as well as to guide subsurface hydrogeological investigations. By combining the remotely sensed surface information and the extensive subsurface dataset from over 40 monitoring piezometer boreholes we demonstrate that many wet zones initially mapped from the IKONOS imagery are indicative of sites with seasonally persistent very high groundwater levels within landslide-prone slopes and on intermittently active landslides. Where such surface-subsurface water linkage can be established, the appearance of the wet zones (fully saturated ground/soil) resulting from groundwater discharge or seepage can be used as a forewarning signal of the increased susceptibility to landsliding, since the hillslopes with shallow groundwater tables are generally more prone to failure. The information about changing surface-water conditions retrieved from high resolution satellite data timely acquired during rainy seasons can thus provide crucial input for temporal and spatial landslide hazard assessments. We anticipate that in the near future high resolution optical space-borne remote sensing will become a commonly used tool for monitoring landslide activity and for providing temporal series of spatial data necessary to improve our understanding of causative and triggering processes leading to slope failures.

The paper presents results of SPINUA (Stable Point Interferometry over Unurbanised Areas) Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) processing chain to study Earth surface deformations along the SW coast of the Gulf of Gdañsk, along the SE part of the Baltic Sea. As the input for SPINUA techniques 40 descending ERS-1/2 SLC (Frame = 251, Track = 36) images from the period 1995-2001 has been used. The area of interest (AOI) includes few cities and several towns, villages and harbors. The low lying coastal areas of the SW part of the Gulf of Gdañsk are at risk of floods and marine erosion. The PSI results, however, did not reveal the presence of a regional scale, spatially consistent pattern of displacements. It is likely that any crustal deformations in the AOI simply do not exceed ±2 mm/year, which is the velocity threshold we assumed to distinguish between moving and non-moving persistent scatterers (PS). Importantly, for the most part the urban areas of the main cities (Gdañsk, Gdynia and Sopot) results show ground stability. Nevertheless, significant downward movements up to several mm/year, are locally noticed in the Vistula river delta - alluvial plain system located in the coastal zone east of Gdañsk as well as in the inland area west of the Gdañsk city. Indeed, the highest subsidence rates (-12 mm/year) was observed in the Gdañsk petroleum refinery constructed on alluvial sediments. Thus the anthropogenic loading and consolidation of the recent deposits can locally be an important factor causing ground subsidence.

We argue here that the introduction of an ethical code of conduct that follows the example of the Hippocratic Oath of physicians will help geologists to acquire binding awareness of their professional and social responsibilities. The ethical behavior and obligations of modern geologists involve, but are not limited to, the following issues_ correct land/environment use and management; respect of truth and science; and protection of the Earth systems, on both the local and global scales, and therefore, of our well-being. We believe that for geoligists, the explicit acceptance of an ethical code will help to promote_ (i) an awareness of their social role, expertise and sense of belonging to a professional community; (ii) an understanding of the expectations of citizens and society; and (iii) cultural growth, with better use of research and implementation of scientific and professional skills. All this should enhance the public recognition of the social mission of geologists, which is essential for the well-being of society. Therefore, we suggest that like in the majority of medical schools, ethical training should be a part of the university curriculum for students in geology.

Every year, and in many countries worldwide, wildfires cause significant damage and economic losses due to both the direct effects of the fires and the subsequent accelerated runoff, erosion, and debris flow. Wildfires can have profound effects on the hydrologic response of watersheds by changing the infiltration characteristics and erodibility of the soil, which leads to decreased rainfall infiltration, significantly increased overland flow and runoff in channels, and movement of soil. Debris-flow activity is among the most destructive consequences of these changes, often causing extensive damage to human infrastructure. Data from the Mediterranean area and Western United States of America help identify the primary processes that result in debris flows in recently burned areas. Two primary processes for the initiation of fire-related debris flows have been so far identified_ (1) runoff-dominated erosion by surface overland flow; and (2) infiltration-triggered failure and mobilization of a discrete landslide mass. The first process is frequently documented immediately post-fire and leads to the generation of debris flows through progressive bulking of storm runoff with sediment eroded from the hillslopes and channels. As sediment is incorporated into water, runoff can convert to debris flow. The conversion to debris flow may be observed at a position within a drainage network that appears to be controlled by threshold values of upslope contributing area and its gradient. At these locations, sufficient eroded material has been incorporated, relative to the volume of contributing surface runoff, to generate debris flows. Debris flows have also been generated from burned basins in response to increased runoff by water cascading over a steep, bedrock cliff, and incorporating material from readily erodible colluvium or channel bed. Post-fire debris flows have also been generated by infiltration-triggered landslide failures which then mobilize into debris flows. However, only 12% of documented cases exhibited this process. When they do occur, the landslide failures range in thickness from a few tens of centimeters to more than 6 m, and generally involve the soil and colluvium mantled hillslopes. Surficial landslide failures in burned areas most frequently occur in response to prolonged periods of storm rainfall, or prolonged rainfall in combination with rapid snowmelt or rain-on-snow events.
