BETTER Project Takes Flight: Pioneering Sustainable Offshore Wind Farms

The BETTER project, a prestigious Doctoral Networks – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, has officially commenced with a successful two-day kick-off meeting held at the Arsenale facilities of the CNR-ISMAR Institute of Marine Sciences in Venice. Coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR) and led by CNR-IRPI researcher Giulia Bossi, this project brings together a diverse, multidisciplinary team including the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Delft University of Technology, Kiel University, Ifremer, WavEC – Offshore Renewables, CNRS, and the University of Warwick, along with 11 other associated partners across Europe.

The demand of clean energy in the EU and worldwide have never been greater, driven by the need to provide energy security and reduce overall carbon emissions. BETTER aims to address these challenges by integrating engineering aspects with environmental considerations in the design of Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs). This collaborative approach advocates for a paradigm shift in OWF design, promoting a comprehensive strategy that fosters solutions for OWF construction and sustainable marine development. By providing a cross-disciplinary training environment, BETTER will train15 Doctoral Candidates with the skills, knowledge, and perspectives to navigate the intersection of engineering, environmental sustainability, and marine biodiversity, laying a foundation for a sustainable and resilient future for offshore wind energy and marine ecosystems.
