Uncertainty in the quantification of earthquake loading poses one of the major difficulties in local scale seismic landslide susceptibility assessments. This problem can be exacerbated for slope settings that are likely to produce considerable amplifications of seismic shaking. We address this issue by examining the case of a historic landslide triggered by the 1627 Apulian (southern Italy) earthquake (epicentral intensity X on the MCS scale) in the peri-urban area of Caramanico (central Italy), distant *120 km from the epicenter. The failure caused a large downslope displacement and destroyed several buildings. The slope seismic response is assessed using data from long-term accelerometer monitoring of the hillslope and from recent ambient noise measurements. This provided evidence of significant directional amplifications, e.g., by a factor of approximately 4 and 20, respectively in terms of peak horizontal acceleration and Arias Intensity during the 2009 Mw 6.3 L'Aquila earthquake that occurred 60 km NW of Caramanico. Then taking into account the site amplification, permanent displacements are calculated by applying a rigorous Newmark approach. This study shows that historical information on landslides triggered at apparently anomalously large distances from an earthquake epicentre can help to identify hillslopes influenced by site effects and that reconnaissance-type measurements of ambient noise can be useful to reveal directional amplifications. The importance of accurate assessments of other relevant input parameters (e.g., material properties, slip surface geometries, groundwater conditions) used in seismic slope modeling is also recognized.

Il bacino del Po è il più esteso d'Italia. Il Fiume nasce in Piemonte, alle pendici del Monviso ed attraversando l'intera Pianura Padana è alimentato da 141 affluenti_ dopo un percorso di 652 km si getta nell'Adriatico a Nord di Ravenna, con un delta di quasi 400 km2. Il bacino ha una superficie di circa 74.000 km2 che ricadono nei confini nazionali eccetto 3.000 km2 appartenenti alla Svizzera e per una piccola parte alla Francia; 890 km2 sono occupati dai grandi laghi alpini (Garda, Maggiore, Como, Iseo, solo per citare i principali), mentre poco meno di 400 km2 sono occupati dalle aree glaciali. Il bacino padano è giustamente considerato il cuore economico del Paese in quanto in esso si produce il 40% del prodotto interno lordo. E' presente, inoltre, il 37% dell'industria nazionale, che sostiene il 46% dei posti di lavoro e oltre il 30% della produzione agricola [2]. Nel bacino vivono circa 16 milioni di abitanti e si contano circa 3.200 comuni. Il bacino del Po ha anche una grande valenza naturalistica testimoniata dalla presenza di oltre 60 parchi, riserve, oasi naturali_ il delta del Po è stato anche dichiarato patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO. Il bacino del Po è il bacino idrografico nel quale si sono registrate le maggiori e più gravose inondazioni della storia d'Italia.

This case study examines 10 municipal areas of the Pioverna River valley bottom (Valsassina, Northern Italy). Flood-prone areas were identified using historical research and geomorphological analysis. The historical research for different areas utilized records from the State technical office archives, Ministry of Public Works, Hydrographical Offices of the Po River, Civil Engineers, Record Office, public libraries, local and national newspapers archives, and municipal archives. Large amounts of historical data on past floods were collected, reviewed and validated to map flood-damaged locations. A geomorphological analysis was also conducted in which multi-temporal aerial photographs were studied and field surveys conducted to verify the reliability of the historical data and the planform changes of the Pioverna River course. The analysis of historical and geomorphological data produced a flood-prone area map with two different hazard zones identified along the Pioverna River. Aerophotogrammetric and cadastral maps were used to verify and update the urban planning of 10 municipalities studied. The mosaic map of the urban plannings shows four classes of land-use destinations, as defined according to the different levels of building exposure. On a matrix, the four land-use classes were matched to flood hazard sites of the two zones along the Pioverna River. The resulting map defines five classes of different flood risk. The results of the study have been used to verify present land-use planning and to start a review process of the existing urban plans and/or their general changes.

On geological time-scales the carbon fluxes from the solid Earth to the atmosphere mainly result from volcanism and metamorphic-decarbonation processes, whereas the carbon fluxes from atmosphere to solid Earth mainly depend on weathering of silicates and carbonates, biogenic precipitation and removal of CaCO3 in the oceans and volcanic gases - seawater interactions. Quantifying each contribution is critical. In this work, we estimate the atmospheric CO2 uptake by weathering in the Alps, using results of the study of the dissolved loads transported by 33 main Alpine rivers. The chemical composition of river water in unpolluted areas is a good indicator of surface weathering processes (Garrels and Mackenzie, 1971; Drever, 1982; Meybeck, 1984; Tardy, 1986; Berner and Berner, 1987; Probst et al., 1994). The dissolved load of streams originates from atmospheric input, pollution, evaporite dissolution, and weathering of carbonate and silicate rocks, and the application of mass balance calculations allows quantification of the different contributions. In this work, we applied the MEGA (Major Element Geochemical Approach) geochemical code (Amiotte Suchet, 1995; Amiotte Suchet and Probst, 1996) to the chemical compositions of the selected rivers in order to quantify the atmospheric CO2 consumed by weathering in Alpine region. The drainage basins of the main Alpine rivers were sampled near the basin outlets during dry and flood seasons. The application of the MEGA geochemical consisted in several steps. First, we subtracted the rain contribution in river waters knowing the X/Cl (X = Na, K, Mg, Ca) ratios of the rain. Next, we considered that all (Na+K) came from silicate weathering. The average molar ratio Rsil = (Na+K)/(Ca+Mg) for rivers draining silicate terrains was estimated from unpolluted French stream waters draining small monolithological basins (Meybeck, 1986; 1987). For the purpose, we prepared a simplified geo-lithological map of Alps according to the lithological classification of Meybeck (1986, 1987). Then for each basin we computed Rsil weighted average considering the surface and the mean precipitation for the surface area of each lithology. Lastly, we estimated the (Ca+Mg) originating from carbonate weathering as the remaining cations after silicate correction. Depending on time-scales of the phenomena (shorter than about 1 million year i.e. correlated to the short term carbon cycle, or longer than about 1 million years i.e. correlated to the long-term carbon cycle), we considered different equations for the quantification of the atmospheric CO2 consumed by weathering (Huh, 2010). The results show the net predominance of carbonate weathering on fixing atmospheric CO2 and that, considering the long-term carbon cycle, the amount of atmospheric CO2 uptake by weathering is about one order of magnitude lower than considering the short-term carbon cycle. Moreover, considering the short-term carbon cycle, the mean CO2 consumed by Alpine basins is of the same order of magnitude of the mean CO2 consumed by weathering by the 60 largest rivers of the world estimated by Gaillardet et al. (1999).

Valori di infiltrazione sono necessari per stimare la quantità di acqua che fluisce nel suolo. Esistono diversi metodi per stimare l'infiltrazione e le differenti componenti del ciclo idrologico, nonché modelli di bilancio idrologico a diverse scale (oraria, giornaliera, mensile, annua) e con diversi gradi di complessità. Modelli mensili sono stati sviluppati da Thornthwaite (1948) e rivisti da Thornthwaite e Mater (1957). In questo lavoro - con l'obiettivo di stimare i valori di infiltrazione nell'area alpina - abbiamo implementato un codice in R (un software open source di statistica ed elaborazione grafica - R Core Team, 2012) basato su un software di pubblico dominio scritto in Java da McCabe & Markstrom (2007). Il codice effettua un'analisi spaziale del bilancio mensile. Gli input del modello sono_ (1) le temperature medie mensili e le precipitazioni medie mensili mondiali, disponibili dal sito web dell'IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change); (2) il modello digitale del terreno ASTER GDEM, disponibile dai siti dell'ERSDAC (Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center) e della NASA; (3) i dati dei tematismi del suolo dell'Eurasia provenienti dall'European Soil Database (v2.0), disponibili dal sito web del JRC (Joint Research Center). Il bilancio idrologico è stato effettuato in un grid 0.5° x 0.5°(corrispondente al grid dell'IPCC) sovrastante le Alpi. Per ciascuna cella è stato valutato il livello di incertezza calcolando i valori minimi, massimi e medi dell'infiltrazione efficace ed è stata propagata nel modello l'incertezza associata ai parametri di input (dati climatologici, morfologici e dei tematismi del suolo). Il modello è in grado di effettuare bilanci idrologici a scala regionale usando dati aperti e software open source, sebbene debba essere validato e testato in differenti aree di studio. Natural landslides exhibit scaling properties, including the frequency of the size of the landslides, and the rainfall conditions responsible for landslides. Reasons for the scaling behavior of landslides are poorly known, and only a few attempts were made to describe the empirical evidences of the self-similar scaling behavior of landslides with physically based models. We investigate the possibility of using the TRIGRS code, a consolidated, physically motivated, numerical model to describe the stability conditions of natural slopes forced by rainfall, to determine the frequency of the area of the unstable slopes and the rainfall intensity-duration (I-D) conditions that result in landslides in a region.We apply TRIGRS in a portion of the Upper Tiber River Basin, Central Italy. The spatially distributed model predicts the stability conditions of individual grid cells, given the terrain and rainfall conditions. We run TRIGRS using multiple rainfall histories, and we compare the results to empirical evidences of the size of landslides and of the rainfall conditions that have caused landslides in the area. TRIGRS reproduces two scaling properties of landslides i.e., i) the size of the patches of terrain predicted as unstable by the model, that match the frequency size statistics of landslides in the study area, and ii) the mean rainfall D,I conditions that result in unstable slopes, that match rainfall I-D thresholds for possible landslide occurrence. Our results prove that even a relatively simple physically based model that describes the complex interactions controlling the stability conditions of natural slopes forced by rainfall is capable of reproducing two well known scaling properties of landslides events e.g., I-D thresholds for possible landslide occurrence, and the frequency density of landslide areas, also corroborating the robustness of the model.

Landslides are widespread natural and man made phenomena. They are triggered by earthquakes, rapid snow melting, human activities, but mostly by typhoons and intense or prolonged rainfall precipitations. In Italy mostly they are triggered by intense precipitation. The prediction of landslide triggered by rainfall precipitations over large areas is commonly based on the exploitation of empirical models. Empirical landslide rainfall thresholds are used to identify rainfall conditions for the possible landslide initiation. It's common practice to define rainfall thresholds by assuming a power law lower boundary in the rainfall intensity-duration or cumulative rainfall-duration space above which landslide can occur. The boundary is defined considering rainfall conditions associated to landslide phenomena using heuristic approaches, and doesn't consider rainfall events not causing landslides. Here we present a new fully automatic method to identify the probability of landslide occurrence associated to rainfall conditions characterized by measures of intensity or cumulative rainfall and rainfall duration. The method splits the rainfall events of the past in two groups_ a group of events causing landslides and its complementary, then estimate their probabilistic distributions. Next, the probabilistic membership of the new event to one of the two clusters is estimated. The method doesn't assume a priori any threshold model, but simple exploits the real empirical distribution of rainfall events. The approach was applied in the Umbria region, Central Italy, where a catalogue of landslide timing, were obtained through the search of chronicles, blogs and other source of information in the period 2002-2012. The approach was tested using rain gauge measures and satellite rainfall estimates (NASA TRMM-v6), allowing in both cases the identification of the rainfall condition triggering landslides in the region. Compared to the other existing threshold definition methods, the prosed one (i) largely reduces the subjectivity in the choice of the threshold model and in how it is calculated, and (ii) it can be easier set-up in other study areas. The proposed approach can be conveniently integrated in existing early-warning system to improve the accuracy of the estimation of the real landslide occurrence probability associated to rainfall events and its uncertainty.

Exploiting to the maximum possible extent the information contained in spatial data, along with specialized and optimized computing intensive analysis processes, is mandatory in order to cope with the challenges posed by the huge amount of existing and upcoming data. Dealing with spatial data and related computing processes can be a hard task for many subjects, preventing proper dissemination of information and modeling advances. One possibility for sharing data content, specialized model implementation and distributed computing power is represented by Web Processing Services, an Open Geospatial Consortium standard specifically designed to facilitate the inter-operability of geospatial data by client-server interfaces. The client side of the interface presents the user with a choice of services exposed by the server, and the possibility of specifying parameter values and uploading own maps. The main advantages of such an approach are the possibility of publishing specialized and optimized processes, corresponding to sound and well- established models; the complexity of the implemented processes is hidden by the server side, where a number of chained procedures can be summarized in a single service, optionally using different programming languages and, most importantly, exploiting distributed and parallel computing. We have implemented tools for (i) statistical models of the distribution of landslide areas (ii) estimation of the attitude of bedding planes from the corresponding bedding traces (iii) production of maps showing the geometrical relationship between bedding planes and terrain slopes (iv) automatic delineation of hydrological slope units. These few prototype services for landslide modeling, representative of a vast class of processes from the algorithmic implementation point of view and the parallelization schemes we have used, represent a starting point for a systematic publication of models through similar web services.

We present the results obtained from the use of complementary monitoring techniques, which allowed us to investigate the long (multi-decadal) and the short (seasonal) term geomorphological evolution of the Montaguto earthflow, a 3 km long earthflow in the southern Apennines of Italy. Following an analysis of the different methods and techniques available to measure the surface deforma- tion caused by large earthflows, we selected a combination of monitoring techniques ranging from in-situ to remote sensing, including aerial and satellite optical imagery, multitemporal airborne LiDAR surveys, and three-dimensional topographic measurements captured by three Robotized Total Stations. The examination of the available aerial, satellite and hill-shade images revealed a cyclic, long-term behavior of mass movements of different types in the Rio Nocelle catchment occupied by the recent Montaguto earthflow in the 58-year period 1954 - 2011. The combined analysis of six DEMs generated from LiDAR surveys allowed measuring the material eroded from the landslide crown area (Volume ~ 1.4 Million cubic meters) and deposited in the landslide toe area (Volume ~1.2 Million cubic meters), in the period from 2004 to June 2011. The analysis of a large set of high-accuracy topographic measurements revealed the kinematical characteristics of different sectors of the active earthflow, and allowed for the reconstruction of the temporal and spatial surface deformation of the moving failure. The insights obtained studying the Montaguto earthflow are significant for the geo-mechanical modeling of similar earthflows in the same geographical area, for geomorphological regional landslide mapping, and for the evaluation of the hazard and the risk posed by large earthflows in southern Italy and in similar physiographic regions.

The combined effect of regional uplift, denudation/deposition processes and active faulting produces characteristic drainage network and morpho-structural features. In areas undergoing extensional faulting, the investigation of the tectono-sedimentary evolution of fault-controlled basins through the analysis of morpho-structural features and drainage pattern can provide valuable information on the space-time evolution of the active deformation. We explore this topic on a Quaternary extensional basin located in the upper part of the Pugliola and Attone basins (Northern Apennines of Italy) where both GPS and seismological data reveals the recent tectonic activity of the area. The Quaternary extension has been accommodated by NW-SE trending normal faults, which have attained mature morphologic and structural features and, nowadays, separate mountain ranges from intermountain basins. In order to understand the Quaternary evolution of the study area, we integrate field data with river longitudinal profiles analysis and aerial-photo-geological interpretation. Most of the morpho-structural features were identified through the analysis of multi-scale and multi-temporal aerial photographs, identifying the_ (i) attitude of fault and bedding planes, (ii) fault-controlled landslides, (iii) pattern of rivers network and (iv) spatial distribution of river terraces. Basing on our analysis we show that recent faulting occurs on NE-dipping and SW-dipping structures, which cut the inherited landscape and deform the continental deposits. Recent fault motion has conditioned the rivers pathway and the tectono-sedimentary evolution of their valleys, where fault-controlled subsidence has captured the river courses and produced subsiding plains. The location of landslides close to extensional faulting suggests a structural control also on the morphological instabilities and hence has implications for hazard.

Morphometric parameters are widely used in landslides mapping and modeling. Morphological information is used by geomorphologists to map landslides in the field or during aerial photo-interpretation and using remote sensing techniques. Landslide models can explicitly consider this information (e.g. slope in physically-based infinite slope modeling), or assess its importance through a statistical inference (e.g. morphometric variables used in statistical multivariate landslide susceptibility models). Investigators have attempted to quantify morphological changes produced by landslides locally or in small areas, but at present no common criteria, or set of variables or analysis tools exist to compare globally these changes. Here we present a framework to analyze the morphological fingerprints of landslides in a territory. We also define a method to group them in categories based on different triggers and environmental settings. For this purpose we identify a set of morphometric variables and a procedure to distinguish different morphological landslide signatures. Further we provide a web processing service to allow external user to apply the proposed procedure in specific areas. Our intent is to create a library of the landslide morphological signatures as much as possible complete. Results will be helpful to improve_ (a) the ability to detect landslide on the surface, (b) the modeling capabilities, and (c) the knowledge of landslide processes.

Relationships between landslides and drainage network arrangement have been investigated by classical and quantitative geomorphological analysis in an intermountain valley (i.e. the upper valley of the Sinni River) of the southern Italian Apennines. The 120 km 2-wide test-area is characterized by very low grade metamorphic rocks (mainly shale) and associated crystalline-metamorphic rocks which underwent high exhumation and uplift rates during Quaternary times. We recognized and mapped 534 landslides through the stereoscopic in- terpretation of one set of 20 panchromatic aerial photographs 1_33,000 scale. Landslides were classified according to both type of movement and relative age. We detected and mapped 35 new landslides after a long rainfall period during the winter 2008-2009. The percentage of area affected by landslides (DL) of the area has a high value (about 37%). Analysis of distribution of landslides areas within different age classes sug- gests that recent/present-day landslide distribution is strongly influenced by the legacy of widespread large and ancient landslides, probably generated within a different morpho-climatic setting. A quantitative geo- morphological analysis of the drainage network has been performed to evaluate the influence of landslide processes on morphometric properties of the drainage network. In particular, the degree of hierarchical orga- nization of the drainage network is assessed through the hierarchical anomaly density, a measure of the number of anomalous confluences (i.e. channels of u order not flowing in channels of order u + 1) in drainage basins. On the basis of statistical relationships between morphometric indices of the drainage network and DL, we argue that the activity of more recent mass movements rather than very old landslides can act as a disturbing element within the development of the drainage network, generating anomalous confluences of the 1st order. Empirical relationships between suspended sediment yield and some geomorphic parameters of the drainage network allowed the estimation of short-term denudation rates in the study area. The com- parison between uplift and denudation rates suggests that the landscape system has not reached a steady state between uplift and erosion, in which tectonic uplift can represent a disturbing element within the re- cent morphogenesis. On the basis of the data presented, (large) mass movements in the study area are mainly linked to the relief growth promoted by Quaternary tectonics, whereas litho-structural and morpho-climatic factors assume a minor role.

Processes of CO2 degassing affect almost all tectonically active areas and metamorphic environments. Here we show the first preliminary map of deep-CO2 degassing of the Alps based on more than 1000 chemical analyses of springs (both data from litterature and new data). Using PHREEQC, for each point we estimated the total dissolved inorganic carbon (TDIC) and through an isotopic and mass balance approach we estimated the values of Ccarb, carbon deriving from carbonate dissolution, and Cinf, the sum between atmospheric CO2 dissolved by rainwater and biogenic CO2. Cdeep, carbon deriving from deep degassing, has been computed considering that [1]: TDIC = Ccarb + Cinf + Cdeep. Ccarb, given by Ca+Mg-SO4, has been estimated for sprigs fed by carbonate aquifers. The flux of deep CO2 associated to each spring discharge is given by Cdeep X Q/A, (Q: flow rate, A_ recharge area), or by Cdeep X IE, (IE: effective infltration, IE=Q/A). IE for each basin have been estimated using a water balance model [2]. Finally we prepared the CO2 degassing map using GSLIB [3]. The results show that CO2 production of Alps is 3 times lower than CO2 production in Central Italy [4], but locally (like in Engadine, Lucomagno Pass, Valtellina etc..) CO2 fluxes are one order of magnitude higher than the baseline of geothermal regions [5]. The highest deep-CO2 degassing areas are located along the more important alpine tectonic structures and in the basins external to the alpine chain. In these areas more detailed investigations should be performed in order to obtain a complete evaluation of the extent and distribution of the CO2 anomalies of the Alps. [1] Chiodini et al.. Evidences of large-scale gravitational movements evolving close to Quaternary faults have been recognized in the north eastern Sicily (south Italy) through the visual inspection of multi-scale and multi-temporal aerial photographs. Geomorphological and photo-geological survey have defined the relationship between the gravitational displacements and the tectonically-controlled landscape modifications conditioned by the presence of fault planes crossing the mountain slopes. In most cases the faults played, or are playing, an active role in increasing the local relief. Furthermore their activity represents the main geomorphic factor conditioning the gravitational movements. These mass movements may have developed in response to the slope weakening subsequent to multiple earthquake events, thus they occurred in the same time period of the Quaternary fault activity. In other cases the faults have also played a passive role by forming the boundary of the sliding masses and coincide with the slip surfaces. In both cases the evolution of the large-scale mass movements is conditioned by the incision of the hydrographic network in response to regional Quaternary uplift. The related erosion causes modifications of the slope morphology and the exhumation of weak discontinuities which may lead to slope instability. The spatial association of Quaternary faulting and large-scale gravitational movements greatly increases the hazard in fault-controlled mountain front landscapes. The evolution of tectonic displacement by coseismic offset may represent a potential cause for the sudden and catastrophic evolution of the gravitational movements. After their emplacement, the large-scale landslide bodies are deeply dismantled by the recent morphogenesis, including recent and present-day landslides that can propagate without any evidence of tectonic displacement and further increase the local landslide hazard.

Infiltration rates can be used to estimate the quantity of water flowing into the soil. Several methods can be used to estimate the water infiltrating into the soil as well as the different components of water cycle. Water balance models have been developed at various time scales (hourly, daily, monthly and yearly) and to varying degrees of complexity. Monthly water balance models were developed by Thornthwaite (1948) and later revised by Thornthwaite and Mather (1957). In this work - with the aim to estimate the infiltration rates in Alpine region - we implemented a code in R (a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics - R Core Team, 2012) based on a public domain software written in Java by McCabe & Markstrom (2007). The code performs a spatial monthly water balance analysis. The model input data consist of_ (1) World mean monthly temperature and monthly total precipitation values, available from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) website; (2) World digital elevation model ASTER GDEM, available from the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC) of Japan and NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Center (LP DAAC) website; (3) Eurasian soil thematic data of the European Soil Database (v2.0), available from the Joint Research Center (JRC) website. The water balance computation was performed on a 0.5° × 0.5° grid (like the IPCC grid) covering the Alps. For each cell, we evaluated a level of uncertainty computing the minimum, maximum and mean infiltration values, and we propagated in the model the uncertainty associated to the original input parameters (climatic, morphological and soil thematic data). Although the model should be validated and tested in different study areas, it allowed to perform a water balance analysis at regional scale using open data and open source software. We expect that this will become a key input for small scale hydrological, hydro-geological and geochemical models in the Alpine region.

In aree con tettonica estensionale, lo studio dell'evoluzione tettonico-sedimentaria di bacini controllati dalle faglie e l'analisi degli elementi morfo-strutturali e delle anomalie del reticolo idrografico può fornire importanti elementi sull'evoluzione spazio-temporale della deformazione. In questo lavoro vengono analizzate le caratteristiche morfo-strutturali e del reticolo idrografico di una porzione del bacino estensionale Quaternario di Gualdo Cattaneo - Bastardo (Appennino Settentrionale), allo scopo di ricostruire la sua evoluzione tettonico-sedimentaria. Quest'area è stata soggetta ad estensione sin dal Pleistocene inferiore. I dati sia di deformazione attiva GPS che sismologici, mostrano che l'area è tuttora attiva con un campo di stress estensionale. Le faglie normali quaternarie hanno raggiunto, nel tempo, una notevole maturità sia morfologica che strutturale e molte di esse separano le dorsali dai bacini intermontani. Allo scopo di comprendere l'evoluzione Quaternaria e la continuità spazio-temporale della deformazione, lo studio morfo-strutturale è stato realizzato attraverso l'interpretazione di immagini aeree stereoscopiche e rilevamenti di campagna. Per l'analisi delle caratteristiche del reticolo idrografico sono stati realizzati anche profili longitudinali dei corsi d'acqua. La maggior parte delle morfo-strutture identificate attraverso l'utilizzo di foto aeree multi-scala e multi-temporali hanno permesso il riconoscimento_ i) della geometria principale dei piani di strato e delle faglie; ii) di alcune deformazioni gravitative legate all'attività delle faglie; iii) di alcune anomalie del reticolo idrografico, e iv) dei terrazzi fluviali e della loro distribuzione spaziale. La nostra analisi mostra che la tettonica recente viene accomodata principalmente da faglie immergenti a NE e a SO che tagliano il paesaggio pre-esistente e deformano i depositi continentali. Sono tuttavia presenti degli elementi trasversali a direzione SO-NE che hanno controllato in parte la morfologia recente. La presenza di catture fluviali e di zone di subsidenza anomala indicherebbero che molte delle faglie dell'area potrebbero aver controllato l'evoluzione morfologica dell'area in tempi recentissimi. La concentrazione di alcuni dissesti in prossimità di faglie normali potrebbe suggerire una certa relazione tra l'instabilità dei versanti con l'attività tettonica recente.

Il carbonio migra all'interno del sistema "atmosfera, oceani, biosfera e terra solida". Il clima terrestre è legato alla quantità di CO2 in atmosfera, pertanto è critica la stima del carbonio coinvolto nei diversi processi. Chiodini et al. (2004) hanno presentato la mappa del degassamento di CO2 nell'Italia centromeridionale, la cui CO2 rilasciata è globalmente significante, ~ 10% della CO2 da vulcanismo subaereo (Kerrick, 2001). La CO2 rilasciata dalla Terra è sottostimata_ processi di degassamento di CO2 interessano aree metamorfiche e sismiche. In questo lavoro mostriamo la mappa del degassamento profondo di CO2 delle Alpi, elaborata partendo da un database (DB) di oltre 1000 analisi chimiche di sorgenti provenienti da dati aperti (pubblicazioni scientifiche, libri, siti web...) e da nuove campagne. Il DB è stato preparato usando software open source_ GRASS (Neterel & Mitasova, 2008), QGIS e PostgreSQL interfacciato con PostGIS. Utilizzando un software di dominio pubblico, PHREEQC (Parkhurst, 1999), per ogni punto del DB abbiamo stimato il carbonio totale inorganico disciolto (TDIC). Considerando che (Chiodini et al., 2000): TDIC = Ccarb + Cinf + Cdeep, (Cdeep = C di origine profonda, Ccarb = C dalla dissoluzione dei carbonati, Cinf = C dall'infiltrazione della pioggia nel suolo), con equazioni di bilancio di massa abbiamo stimato il valore medio di Cinf. Ccarb è stato stimato per sorgenti in acquiferi carbonatici, localizzate attraverso una mappa geolitologica delle Alpi elaborata attraverso mappe geologiche di dominio pubblico e GIS open source (GRASS e QGIS). Abbiamo stimato i valori di infiltrazione efficace attraverso dati aperti e software open source per elaborare la mappa dei flussi di CO2 usando un software pubblico, GSLIB (Deutsch & Journel, 1988). Concludendo_ usando dati aperti e GIS open source è possibile elaborare la mappa dei flussi di CO2 profonda delle Alpi, utile per localizzare aree di forte degassamento dove approfondire successive ricerche.
