Education and current position

February 1997: Master degree in Civil Engineering, Technical University of Bari (Italy). Thesis: Elastic behaviour of fractured rock masses.

February 2001: PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, Technical University of Bari (Italy). Thesis: Analysis of the behaviour of rockfill dams overlying stiff clay deposits; 1-year fellow PhD student at the Soil Mechanics Section - Imperial College (London, UK), to develop finite element analyses of rockfill dams overlying clay deposits.

December 2001: Research engineer at CNR-IRPI (National Research Council – Research Institute for Geo-hydrological Protection).

 

Main research activity

2020 –  2021: Leader of the CNR-IRPI research unit in the project financed by the Puglia regional authority aimed at defining advanced methodologies for hazard analysis of coastal rocky cliffs.

2019 –  to date: Scientific coordinator of the CNR-IRPI research unit in the project financed by the Puglia regional authority for the analysis of seismic hazard zoning in the Puglia region.

2019 – to date: Leader of the CNR-IRPI research unit in the project financed by the Italian Ministry of Environment aimed at defining advanced methodologies for the detection, analysis and stabilization of man-made underground caves in soft rocks subjected to sinkhole hazard.

2018 – to date: PhD tutoring at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, to study the earthflow mobility propagation by means of SPH technique application.

2017 – to date: National Civil Protection Department: Senior expert of the research project PON-GOVERNANCE – Strengthening the civil protection management and guidelines to face hydrogeological risk emergency events.

2017: member of the scientific group for consulting in geo-hazards of the Basilicata region civil protection authority.

2017: coordinator for CNR – IRPI of the Diplomazia-2 program (MAECI-DGCS – CNR) – Course 1: Environment/climate change/resilience in the Mediterranean region: education and training of young experts from Mediterranean countries.

2016 – to date: Puglia Region Authority: Scientific coordinator of the research project aimed at defining threshold rainfall for shallow landslides, slope landslide mechanisms and landslide risk in the Puglia region (POR FESR 2014 – 2020).

2014 – 2015: LAMPRE (LAndslide Modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment Preparedness and Recovery Management) project – VII FP; Leader of the task “Finite element modelling of slow active landslides optimized by means of interferometry analysis”.

2014 – 2015: AIM-DAMS (Advanced and Integrated Monitoring of earth-DAMS) Living-Labs project. Leader of the CNR - IRPI research unit: Numerical modelling of the behavior of old dams subjected to impoundment activity and calibration with advanced monitoring dataset.

September 2013: Research fellow at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain) – Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos - to study the kinematical behaviour of earthflows by means of SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) simulation techniques –funded by CNR Short-Term Mobility grant.

2012 – 2013: DORIS (An advanced downstream service for the detection, mapping, monitoring and forecasting of ground deformations) project - VII FP; supervisor of a research grant on numerical modelling of ground surface deformations measured by DInSAR technology.

2007 – 2012: DESIRE (Desertification mitigation and remediation of land) project – VI FP; supervisor of a research grant on erosion and desertification risk in a study area of the Southern Italy; from 2011 to 2012, leader of the CNR-IRPI research unit in the project.

2008 – 2010: PRIN (National Interest Research Project) project Analysis and zonation of the susceptibility and hazard of landslides triggered by extreme events. Project leader: Prof. L. Cascini, University of Salerno.
