Main Research Interests

Mauro Cardinali has worked on a number of items, including: (1) landslide identification and mapping in different morphological and climatic environments, using field surveys and interpretation of aerial photographs; (2) preparation of geomorphological landslides inventory maps, detailed multi-temporal inventory maps, landslide-events inventory maps, at the regional and the local scale; (3) development of photo-geological techniques for the acquisition of geological and structural information; (4) analysis of landslide types and patterns in relation to different geological settings; (5) methods for landslide susceptibility, hazard, vulnerability and risk evaluation; (6) acquisition and use of historical information on landslides and floods for hazard and risk assessment.



Curriculum Vitae

Senior research scientist at the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI). Cardinali graduated in Geology from the University of Perugia in 1983 and joined CNR IRPI in 1988.In the period 0ctober 1989 - March 1990 he was a visiting scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey, in Menlo Park, California, working on small-scale landslide inventory maps for the State of New Mexico (USA), under the supervision of Dr. Earl E. Brabb. He participated in a number of national and European projects. He was responsible for the photo-geological mapping in the Città di Castello and Teramo areas, as part of a national geological mapping program (CARG). He participated to the CNR technical and scientific activities for the National Department of Civil Defense, in the areas affected by (i) the 6 April 2009 L'Aquila earthquake, and (ii) the 1 October 2009 Messina landslides event, Italy. Since 2013, he has a contract for teaching a Course on "Remote Sensing", at the University of Perugia, Department of Earth Sciences.He is author and co-author of more than 60 papers, reports and maps, including more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed international journals.
