Michele Santangelo is a geologist research fellow with the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), where he works under the risk assessment research unit at the Institute for Geo-Hydrological Hazards Assessment (IRPI, www.irpi.cnr.it), in Perugia. He graduated in Geology (BSc) and environmental monitoring (MSc) from the University of Basilicata, in 2009, and his thesis was on quantitative geomorphic analysis of landslides and river network organization in a geologically complex area in Southern Apennines.

In 2014 he obtained a Ph.D. in Earth Science and Geo-technologies, from the University of Perugia. His Ph.D. thesis (in English) was entitled: “Remote sensing in landslide studies: data collection, uncertainty evaluation, and applications”. In the period 2013-2014 (during the Ph.D.), he spent a five months period at King’s College London, Department of Geography, under the supervision of Prof. Bruce Malamud (ERASMUS Placement program).During his five-years research activity he has authored and co-authored ten papers in international peer-reviewed journals, four chapters in multi-authored books, nine papers in conference proceedings, more than forty oral and poster contributions at national and international conferences and workshops, fourteen internal project and activity reports, thirteen between published and unpublished landslide inventory maps for areas ranging from the basin to the regional scale, at different consultation scales and of different types (for more than 3000 square kilometers), four photo-geological maps, mainly from aerial photo-interpretation and field survey. He was involved in (i) a project with ENI s.p.a. for the development and integration of innovative Earth Observation techniques for monitoring mass wasting phenomena (ii) the EC DORIS project (http://www.doris-project.eu/), an advanced downstream service for the detection, mapping, monitoring and forecasting of ground deformations at different temporal and spatial scales, (iii) the EC LAMPRE project for LAndslide Modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment Preparedness and REcovery management. He also actively participates to (i) the activities of a project of the Italian National Department of Civil Defense aimed at fostering the national capabilities to forecast rainfall induced landslides, and the associated risk, in Italy, (ii) to a regional project aimed at developing new knowledge and methods, data acquisition on hydrogeological and landslide risk, and definition of rainfall thresholds and landslide hazard zones, and (iii) to the project MEMpHIS Multi Scale and Multi Hazard Mapping Space based Solutions. He was also appointed for teaching and tutoring activities in professional national institutions, at University of Perugia, at University of Basilicata, in capacity building meetings of Italian, European and international projects.
