The research of Ing. Oreste Terranova concerns the understanding and modeling of hydraulic and hydrological processes of interaction between rainfall and slopes. With reference with this topic, he worked on: (i) modeling of sediment transport, (ii) network telemetry for flood forecasting and (iii) in situ experimentation in small representative basins to improve knowledge about the processes on the slope and in the river bed. In particular, he conducted studies on rainfall-runoff models and the acquisition and management of geographic data as a tool for the hydrological research.

Using the tools of mathematical modeling, currently, he deals with the assessment of the risk of water soil erosion, the rainfall affecting the landslide triggering and the regional susceptibility to landslides and, finally, the risk management in the emergency phase through real time monitoring networks.

Civil Engineer (Hydraulics) with 110/110 cum laude, from 1984 is a researcher at the CNR-IRPI.

He participated to research in hydraulics, hydrology and geomorphology. He coordinated responsible (since 1989) many projects concerning river dynamics, and applied geomorphology.

He worked on: (i) the mathematical modeling of sediment transport, (ii) in situ experiments and measurements, also using remote sensor networks, for predicting geo-hydrological phenomena in real time, (iii) the effects in the medium and long-term hydraulic works, (iv) rainfall-runoff modeling, (v) the evaluation water soil erosion at the regional, catchment and parcel scale, (vi) the spatial and seasonal distribution of erosivity, (vii) the evaluation of susceptibility to landslides at regional and basin scale, (viii) hydrological extremes, (ix) the space/temporal structure of rainstorms rain at sub-hourly scale, (x) the trigger mechanism of single landslides and the rainfall threshods on extended homogeneous regions, (xi) decision support systems in emergency phase.

He led and participated in university courses (Identification techniques of hydrological models, Agricultural Hydraulics and hydraulic reclamation, Reclamation and hydraulic works, River mechanics). He worked as a teacher and was the organizer and coordinator of courses and seminars. It was supervisor of doctoral thesis and tutor of post-doc students and contractors. He obtained the “national scientific qualification” as professor of Applied Geology, Physical Geography and Geomorphology - 04 / A3 - II level.

He participated to the activities of international research groups: River channel dynamics, Euro-Mediterranean Research Basins, AMHY-FRIEND (Alpine and Mediterranean Hydrology - Flow Regimes from International Experimental and Network Data) and Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dalle Catastrofi Idrogeologiche (unit 1.4 - flood evaluation - and 2:56 - landslide risk assessment and measuress for prevention and mitigation in homogeneous geo-environmental contexts).
