The CNR IRPI has two main duties within the contract_ A - collection of data concerning past debris flow events in the Italian Alps in order to conduct on them a comprehensive back analyses. The Institute archives are to be used for the purpose, to isolate all the data related to debris flow events for a selected area and integrate them, where necessary and when possible, by field investigations and by study of aerial photographs. At the end a comparison with the data collected by the other European participants will be carried out in order to set an effective damage reduction program. B - to provide field-data (hydrographs, topographic surveys, rainfalls) regarding the debris flows occurred since 1990 in a small watershed in the North-East of Italy (Rio Moscardo, Paluzza, Friuli Venezia Giulia) and recorded by the monitoring devices installed by the Institute. These data will be used to verify and calibrate the mathematical models developed by the other partners in the project. Two gaging stations, 300 m apart on the alluvial fan of the creek, recorded the passage of 8 surges during the past years and a raingauge monitored the amount of rainfall. The Institute will also increase the monitoring devices in Rio Moscardo by adding a third gaging station and a movie camera. It will be also examined the possibility of using seismographs or load cells to study this kind of phenomena. This monitoring activity will increase the available knowledge on the rheological behavior of debris flows and provide new field data on these phenomena.
