Real-time monitoring of the “San Lorenzo” tunnel, Passo della Morte

Real-time monitoring of the “San Lorenzo” tunnel, Passo della Morte (UD), in relation to the existing landslide movements

Background

The entrance of the tunnel “San Lorenzo” in Forni di Sotto (UD) has built over a an active landslide body. The gravitational deformations of the slope are damaging the lining of the tunnel and creating a hazardous condition.

Purpose

The aim of the project is to implement monitoring system integrated with a web-based platform to collect and measure the deformations of the tunnel. The system implementation is designed to mitigate the hazard due to sudden collapse of portions of the lining.

Methods

A web-based platform has been implemented to serve as an effective tool for stakeholders to access and analyze data gathered from the instruments installed in the tunnel. The platform guarantees an autonomous, real time monitoring, and it is capable of triggering alarms. It is furthermore capable of integrating different types of sensors in order to provide a level of redundancy.

Conclusions

The data gathered by the system showed an acceleration of deformation as a result of heavy rainfalls. Redundancy, scalability and integration of different types of sensors in the monitoring system, along with a good management of the database through the use of the web platform, are key factors to improve the reliability of complex monitoring systems.
