In this work the implementation of the active vision system SVA (Balsamo et al., 2007) is presented, for the acquisition and the faithful reproduction of the Napoleonic map of Moncenisio. Due to its historic relevance and information contents, the map is described in a companion paper (Vassallo 2007). In our article the image digitalization process of this historical map has been described. This operation was not trivial since the aim of the project is to obtain a digital copy of the map without geometric distortions and with precise colorimetric information. Moreover, the aim is to produce a final digital image at very high resolution so that also small details are captured (e.g. thin lines). The availability of a reliable copy of this Napoleonic map offers several opportunity of exploitation_ historical cartography and the history of cartographic techniques, cultural heritage preservation and fruition being the most obvious.
The paper describes the adopted procedures and the difficulties (resolution, working space and its accessibility,
illumination problems) met in this work and examines the possible commercial alternatives. In the end, the performance of this techniques are evaluated by comparing the acquired map with the original one.

This contribution describes the approach of two wide coastal areas, located in two countries, Argentina and Italy, to the regulation of groundwater utilisation and protection,
considering the general purpose to satisfy the current demand of high quality water and to guarantee sustainable utilisation of groundwater resources. The contribution also considers some local government initiatives concerning the protection of water resources, in terms of availability and quality, and of ecosystems. Moreover, attention is given to the effect of the whole water cycle management, comparing Italian national legislation, defined in the framework of European Union, considering the specificities of Apulian region, with Argentine national legislation, considering the specificity of Buenos Aires province. Natural resources management is considered from two perspectives_ legislation and the
government structure managing it. It can be argued that the two cases studied possess, up to a certain extent, completely opposing advantages and disadvantages and are therefore complementary.

The large Sibari Plain (southern Italy) is crossed by 24 rivers with mouths on the Ionian Sea. On the basis of a huge analysis of tens of boring, geophysical studies and many
hydrogeological surveying campaigns, the conceptual model of the whole plain is defined. The shallow and phreatic aquifer and the deep and confined aquifer can be distinguished. The numerical model of flow is calibrated considering climatic, river yield and piezometric data and it is utilised to evaluate the effect of current groundwater discharge by wells. The numerical results are compared and validated considering a time series approach based on the utilisation rainfall, temperature and piezometric data collected from the thirties until 2006 in-situ measurements. The numerical simulation of the current stage of groundwater discharge shows it is not sustainable in the case of shallow aquifer and it can be improved in the case of deep aquifer.

The validation of cloud top and ozone vertical column, measured by SCIAMACHY, were carried out respectively by lidars and in-situ and remote-sensing ozone instruments on-board the high altitude Geophysica aircraft. Cloud top and ozone measurements were conducted during the transfer flights of the Geophysica from Europe to Brazil and in the Tropics, from Araçatuba, from January to the end of February 2005. The Validation campaign, financed by ESA, was embedded within a scientific campaign in the frame of two EC projects_ APE-INFRA and Troccinox. Validation of MIPAS-ENVISAT products were planned by means of the corresponding instrument MIPAS-STR which was also on-board the Geophysica, and by means of other in-situ instruments. Some results of MIPAS-STR are reported here; however, the MIPAS data from the ENVISAT are not available. In general the validations show some discrepancies between the data collected by the Geophysica and the instruments on board of ENVISAT, which
cannot easily be explained by the displacement of the satellite and aircraft measurements.

Multitemporal analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images has gained an ever increasing attention due to the availability of several satellite platforms with different revisit times and to the intrinsic capability of the SAR system of producing all-weather observations. As a drawback, automated analysis in general and change detection in particular are made difficult by the inherent noisiness of SAR imagery. Even if a preprocessing step aimed at speckle reduction is adopted, most of algorithms borrowed from computer vision cannot be profitably used. In this work, a novel pixel feature suitable for change analysis is derived from information-theoretic concepts. It does not require preliminary despeckling and capable of providing accurate change maps from a couple of SAR images. The rationale is that the negative of logarithm of the probability of an amplitude level in one image conditional to the level of the same pixel in the other image conveys an information on the amount of change occurred between the two passes. Experimental results carried out on two couples of multitemporal SAR images demonstrate that the proposed IT feature outperforms the Log-Ratio in terms of capability of discriminating flooded areas and outlining their borders.

The Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR-IRPI) located in Turin, since its foundation in 1970, has gathered a substantial and varied large volume of information dealing with natural instability processes (mainly landslides and floods) occurred in the last three centuries in the hydrographic basins of northern Italy. In collaboration with the Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR-ISTI) located in Pisa, a system of information management has been devised and realized, with the aim to computerize all available resources. This system is characterized by an open structure to the integration by other source information, the possibility to be used by any web browser, to query by an user friendly graphic interface, the coherence with web development trends and rules of website accessibilities and, last but not the least, the low cost.

si sta delineando come strumento conoscitivo di causa ed effetto delle dinamiche e delle variabilità climatiche.
In quest'ottica, lo studio della desertificazione, fenomeno complesso legato a vari fattori, tra cui
anche le variazioni climatiche e le attività antropiche, si configura come il giusto approccio alla conoscenza
della relazione clima-biosfera, posta alla base degli attuali modelli globali climatici. Il gruppo di lavoro
composto da ricercatori degli istituti IRPI ed ISE ha condotto uno studio in un'area del Crotonese
(Calabria), volto alla caratterizzazione della sensibilità ambientale alla desertificazione e alla validazione
della metodologia utilizzata per tale applicazione, basata sulla valutazione della funzionalità del suolo e,
quindi, del suo stato di qualità e della sua resilienza.

We compare the results of two independent synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry (DInSAR) approaches to slope instability investigations in the Maratea valley (Southern Italy), based on different processing methods and software. The area selected for the comparison is well ground truthed and provides suitable examples of movements ranging from mm to cm per year. The DInSAR analyses are based on the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) and Stable Point INterferometry over Unurbanised Areas (SPINUA) techniques. Both methods are applied to SAR images acquired by the ERS-1/2 satellites in the period 1992-2000. Despite the differences in the data processing and minor discrepancies between the displacement maps, mainly due to differences in data classification and thresholding, the results obtained from the two techniques are largely comparable and provide very similar ground surface motion information that leads to a clear distinction between stable and unstable areas and between the zones with different velocity of movement.
