A model for the analysis of topographic
influence on shallow landslide initiation is applied
to an experimental mountain basin where high-resolution
digital elevation data are available_ the
Cordon catchment (5 km2) located in northern Italy.
The model delineates those areas most prone to
shallow landsliding due to surface topographic effects
on hydrologic response. The model is composed
of two parts_ a steady-state model for shallow
sub-surface runoff and an infinite-slope Coulomb
failure model which assumes that the soil is
cohesionless at failure. An inventory of landslide
scars is used to document sites of instability and to
provide a test of model performance by comparing
observed landslide locations with model predictions.
The model reproduces the observed distribution
of landslide locations in a consistent way, although
spatial variations in soil strength and transmissivity,
which are not accounted for in the model,
influence specific distribution of landslide areas
within regions of similar topographic control.

Abstract

In order to predict debris flow characteristics it is necessary to determine the rheological properties of these mixtures. It is here suggested that the mixture composing a debris flow (which often contains boulders surprisingly large) can be obtained by adding to clear water successively coarser particles derived from a sample of the debris flow material. At each addition different suspensions are obtained that can be considered as progressively coarser interstitial fluids of the complete mixture. These suspensions are easier to be tested and their rheological properties can thus be determined. The behavior of the complete material can then be inferred from these results. This procedure has been adopted for a debris flow that occurred in Italy in 1995; several suspensions have been generated using a sample of the debris flow and a wide range of rheometrical techniques have been used to determine their rheological characteristics_ laboratory rheometer, inclined plane test, large-scale rheometer, field tests. Some experimental difficulties have appeared at each step, thus only approximate results could be obtained with this method. The rheological parameters and behavior type of the complete material have been inferred from the yield stress-solid fraction curve and from the flow curve evolution. The behavior has been found to be mainly viscoplastic and representable by a Herschel-Bulkley model.

Debris flow material is commonly accepted to exhibit yield stress. However, the concept of yield stress is often not very clear since many different experimental and theoretical approaches to the yielding process of fluid granular materials have been proposed and this can give rise to misleading conclusions. This paper attempts to clarify the physical meaning of yield stress for granular materials and to examine its significance as a factor not only directly affecting the initiation of motion but also indirectly related to the shear resistance causing motion to cease. Experimental data from a 60 cm diameter cone-and-plate rheometer using plastic granular material suggests the existence of hysteresis between shear stress in initiation (yield stress) and cessation of motion of a granular material.
