The document outlines the planned activities of the Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica (IRPI) with regard to algorithm development on discharge estimation using multisource remote sensing datasets, IRPI’s Kinematic Storage Model (KSM) model to map inundation extent to provide advance data and knowledge in better understanding of flood risk assessment. The planned activities include development of generic algorithm for satellite image processing that covers the region of Nigeria, prototype framework to estimate discharge that will support operationalizing to other river basins in the region. KSM will be tested for the pilot basin in India to assess the reliability of algorithm in operational flood inundation modeling. The spatio-temporal resolution of the discharge product is 250-500m and inundation derived from KSM model will be 90m as it uses freely available SRTM datasets. If successful, the findings of this pilot study can be used as the basis for a large-scale initiative, linking flood related parameters in ongoing projects including flood insurance, flood recession agriculture activities to support new information in addressing flood risk reduction.
