Since the first settlements, the flat Salento landscapes (south eastern Italy) have been modified to drain surface waters, to discharge floods and to reclaim swamps. The Asso catchment basin is part of a complex hydrological system located within a wide graben and encloses a network of natural and artificial channels joined to karst holes (ponors) owing to flooding and epidemiological problems. Presently, channels and water sinks aim to be filled with alluvium so that without periodic detritus removal they would be obstructed leading the expansion of wetlands. The Quaternary evolution is reconstructed and the analogies with the polje of similar tectonic setting and climate regions are pointed out. Finally, geo-hydrological protection issues are exposed.
