Use of SMAP soil moisture products for operational flood forecasting: data assimilation and antecedent wetness conditions assessment

Background

The project aims at using Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) soil moisture (SM) products at different spatial resolution (3, 9, and 36 km) for hydrological applications in Europe (mainly in Italy).

Scopo

Firstly, SMAP SM products will be assimilated into continuous rainfall-runoff modelling to demonstrate their impact on runoff prediction with more emphasis on extremes, i.e., forecasting floods and droughts. The second application of SMAP SM products will address the estimation of rainfall from SM data by applying a recent algorithm, called SM2RAIN. The obtained new daily rainfall products will be also merged with other state-of-the-art satellite products as the ones delivered from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission.
