I principali interessi di ricerca riguardano:

-        studio e monitoraggio dei movimenti gravitativi con particolare riferimento alle deformazioni gravitative profonde di versante e alle grandi frane;

-        cartografia geomorfologica e caratterizzazione cinematica dei movimenti franosi;

-        tecniche innovative per il monitoraggio e l’allarme;

-        valutazione della pericolosità da frana e gestione del rischio.

Laurea in Scienze Geologiche all’Università di Padova nel 1984 con una tesi di geomorfologia glaciale e ricercatore del CNR dal 1986. Dal 2001 è Dirigente di Ricerca e dal 2009 responsabile dell’Unità di Padova dell’IRPI. L’attività di ricerca si è prevalentemente concentrata su temi di geologia e geomorfologia applicata con particolare riferimento alla valutazione della pericolosità e alla gestione del rischio da frana. Dal 1990 è stato attivamente coinvolto in numerosi progetti europei tra i quali Epoch, Teslec, Newtech, Runout, Oasys, Preview, Mountain Risk, Increo, Changes ecc. e dal 2001 al 2004 è stato project manager del progetto ALARM “Assessment of Landslide Risk and Mitigation in Mountain Areas”. Dal 1999 è referente della collaborazione con il Ministry of Land, Infrastructures, Transport and Tourism giapponese. In questo ambito nel 2001 ha ricevuto dal Public Works Research Institute il “Research Award for Foreign Specialist” e nel 2003 ha fondato il GRJL, “Geo-Risk Joint Lab, Italy-Japan Joint Laboratory on hydrogeological risks”,  tra i progetti di grande rilevanza sostenuti dal Ministero Affari Esteri nel 2003 e 2004. Nel 2005 è stato inoltre tra i membri fondatori di TellNet “International Disaster Transfer Live Lessons Network” (http://www.tell-net.jp), stabilito a Kobe in occasione della Seconda Conferenza Mondiale delle Nazioni Unite sulla Riduzione dei Disastri, a cui ha partecipato, così come alla Terza Conferenza (Sendai 14-18 marzo 2015) in qualità di membro della delegazione ufficiale italiana accreditata all’evento. Dal 1990 ha svolto attività di consulenza scientifica per il Dipartimento Nazionale della Protezione Civile in occasione di calamita nell’Italia nord-orientale. Dal 2005 al 2009 è stato responsabile della Commessa "Frane e altri movimenti di massa". Nel 2011 è stato nominato dal Ministro dell’Ambiente e della tutela del territorio e del Mare membro del Consiglio Direttivo del Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi in rappresentanza degli Enti Scientifici e delle Università. Dal 2014 è responsabile scientifico di un progetto bilaterale CNR-CAS dal titolo “Managing landslide and debris flow risks and increasing resilience through monitoring, modeling and land planning activities” con l’Institute of Mountain Hazard and Environment, dell’Accademia delle Scienze di Chengdu (Sichuan, Cina). Svolge attività di ricerca in numerosi paesi stranieri tra cui Giappone, Taiwan, Cina, Argentina, Malta e collabora con numerose università sia italiane che straniere. E’ autore di più di 170 pubblicazioni su riviste nazionali ad internazionali e su multi-author book. E’ membro dell’executive committee del CERG (European Centre on Geomorphological Hazard) e di numerose associazioni scientifiche tra le quali EGU (European Geosciences Union), AGU (American Geosciences Union), IAG (International Association of Geomorphologists), IAEG (International Association of Engineering Geology and Environment), JGU (Japan Geomorphological Union).
