NEW WAYS TO USE SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS FOR HYDROLOGICAL APPLICATIONS
(soil moisture, rainfall, river discharge –> flood, landslide, drought, water resources management, agriculture, …)

• Digital Twin Earth Hydrology: high resolution replica of the terrestrial water cycle (REFERENCE PAPER, DTE Hydrology Platform 2.0, DTE Hydrology Platform, DTE Hydrology High-resolution data viewer);
• SM2RAIN: rainfall estimation from soil moisture observations (FREELY AVAILABLE DATASETS, SOFTWARE, REFERENCE PAPER);
• How much water is used for irrigation? A new satellite-based approach using satellite soil moisture observations (winning idea of 2018 BayWa challenge at Copernicus Master);
• data assimilation of soil moisture observations into rainfall-runoff modelling;
• use of satellite and in situ soil moisture observations for floods and landslide prediction, erosion assessment, drought monitoring, numerical weather prediction, and rainfall estimation;
• characterization of soil moisture spatial-temporal variability for hydrological monitoring and modelling;
• ground validation of remote sensing observations of soil moisture, rainfall and discharge;
• development of hydrological and hydraulic modelling, with uncertainty;
• flooding risk analysis and flood frequency assessment, under climate change.

To support the research, an experimental activity for the monitoring of hydro-meteorological quantities is carried out.

Biography

Luca Brocca was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1978. He received the M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering and the Ph.D. degree (the Ph.D. thesis, in Italian, can be downloaded here) in Civil Engineering, both with excellence, from the University of Perugia, Italy, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Since 2003 he received a Scholarship and, successively, a Research Fellowship to carry research at the National Research Council (CNR), Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of Perugia (Italy). Since (2009) 2019 he is (Researcher) Director of Research at CNR-IRPI. He is the Head of the Hydrology-Next research group.
