The final event of the HYDRO4C project took place

Progetto 2022PFNNRS_PE10_PRIN2022 – PNRR M4.C2.1.1 – Finanziato dall’Unione europea – Next Generation EU – CUP: B93C22002120001
On 27 February 2026, the closing event of the Hydro4C project, entitled “Water, Rocks and Carbon in the Central Apennines”, was held at the SAE Area of Pieve di Ussita, in the Province of Macerata. The meeting represented the final synthesis of the research activities carried out within the framework of the project, with a specific focus on the interactions among geomorphological, hydrological and geochemical processes in catchments of the Central Apennines.
In particular, the results of the environmental monitoring conducted in the pilot basins were presented, including the quantification of water and geochemical budgets and the estimation of carbon fluxes associated with chemical weathering and solid transport. The Research Units involved, CNR IRPI, the University of Perugia and the University of Florence, illustrated integrated methodological approaches for the joint analysis of discharge, suspended load, dissolved load and atmospheric CO₂ consumption, highlighting the role of mountain catchments as key systems in regulating carbon fluxes at the regional scale.
Special attention was devoted to the link between erosional dynamics, rapid hydrological response and chemical weathering processes, within a setting characterized by high climatic and morphological variability. The event, organized in collaboration with the Order of Geologists of the Marche Region, promoted technical and scientific exchange among researchers, practitioners and institutional representatives, strengthening the dialogue between research activities and land management in an area highly exposed to landslides, sediment transport and hydrogeological risk.
