His main research activities deal with: (i) detection and mapping of landslides in different climatic, geological and morphological environments; (ii) analysis of landslide types and patterns in relation to topography, geology, tectonics and weathering processes; (iii) temporal forecasting of landslides using archive information and multi-temporal inventory maps; (iv) statistics of landslide size, including number, area, volume, and their relationships; (v) landslide susceptibility and hazard assessment using statistical analyses, DInSAR data and GIS technology; (vi) reconstruction of landslide geological models by the integration of surface and subsurface data; (vii) the kinematic typing of landslides with a high social and economic impact; (viii) rock and soil description and classification for engineering geological mapping; (ix) characteristics and thickness of the weathering profile of crystalline rocks; (x) mineralogical, chemical, petrographic and physical characterization of crystalline rocks/soils for engineering geological purposes.

Luigi Borrelli is researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR), Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of Cosenza (Italy). After graduating in Geology from the University of Calabria, he received a PhD in Earth Science from the University of Calabria with a dissertation on "Landslide types and characteristic elements in weathering profiles". He is qualified as professional geologist.
Since 2000 he has been working at the Italian National Research Council - Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (Italy) where he was engaged to carry out research on landslide hazard and risk assessment as well as programming risk mitigation strategies.
Since 2017 he is member of Science and Engineering of the Environment, Construction and Energy PhD School of the University of Calabria.
In 2018 he gained the National scientific qualification for Associate Professor - sector 04/A3 (Applied geology, physical geography and geomorfology).
Since 2019 he is member of Thecnical Committee on “land planning and soil defence” of the National Council of Geologists.
He has been tutor of several PhD and Master degree theses.
He is reviewer for several ISI scientific journals (e.g., Landslides; Geomorphology; Catena; Engineering Geology). Since 2020 he is Editorial Board Member of GeoHazards (ISSN 2624-795X, https://www.mdpi.com/journal/geohazards).
He is author and co-author of over 90 scientific papers including several thematic maps and he is presently engaged in many national and international research projects.
