BETTER is a Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Doctoral Network dedicated to training a new generation of experts capable of designing eco‑friendly offshore wind farms (OWFs) that are resilient to climate‑induced geohazards while safeguarding marine biodiversity. The project brings together universities, research institutes and industry partners across Europe to address the growing environmental and engineering challenges associated with the rapid expansion of offshore renewable energy. BETTER integrates data science, machine learning, marine ecology, oceanography, geotechnics and remote sensing to develop innovative tools and methodologies for assessing OWF impacts and improving infrastructure design. A key component of the project is the mapping and analysis of marine habitats, enabling a better understanding of how OWFs interact with seabed morphology, ecological communities and dynamic marine processes. Through interdisciplinary doctoral training, secondments and network‑wide schools, BETTER equips 15 doctoral candidates with cutting‑edge skills for advancing sustainable offshore energy development. The project contributes to the EU Green Deal by supporting climate‑resilient, biodiversity‑aware and socially responsible marine renewable energy solutions.
