Her studies are mainly addressed to the analysis of the geological and morphological aspects of instability processes that develop in mountain environments, with a focus on morphodynamic processes that occur in  glacial and periglacial areas, on the changes taking place as a result of climate change, and on related hazards. She devotes a specific attention to analyzing the role of climate and geomorphological evolution in predisposing high-altitude slopes to instability, as well as the role of meteorological factors in triggering slope failures. She also studies the recent evolution of glaciers in the Northwestern Alps and its consequences on natural instability. She documents events of natural instability in Northwestern Italy, with a focus on events occurring in mountain areas. In the Italian Glaciology Committee she is the CNR representative and the coordinator for the annual glaciological campaigns in the Western Italian Alps; she is the CNR-IRPI representative inside the Cabina di Regia dei Ghiacciai Valdostani; she is member of the Advisory Board of the GAPHAZ (Glacier and Permafrost Hazards in Mountains) international working group.

Studies:

Dr. Marta Chiarle received a M.A. degree in Geology from the University of Turin (Italy) in 1990, and his Ph.D. in Engineering Geology from the Polytechnic of Turin in 2001, with a thesis on glacial hazards. She has been a visiting scientist at the U.S.Geological Survey - Hazards Team of Golden, Colorado, in 1993-1994 and in 1997, and at the Centre for Natural Hazard Research (CNHR) of Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada in 2008-2009.
